1933 Schlitz Beer 24 Bottle Wooden Case With 1934/35 Old MIlwaukee Bottles - A Rare Find
This offering is for a barn find. This rare case and bottles have been sitting in stasis since 1935.
This Schlitz case was I believe dated April 1933 as per the printing on the case. If correct this would make this wooden beer bottle case made within the first 30 days of the law signed in by Franklin Roosevelt ending prohibition. *See below.
The printing on the case front reads:
Schlitz The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous
The printing on one case end reads:
4-33 B (I believe this reads to be April 1933 and the B stands for Bottles.)
2 DOZ. SMALL
It still has a stapled partial perforated paper label that probably has the same information as is on the bottle labels plus other printed information and decoration as shown in photo's. The other end a painted globe that has an S stamped over the world logo with an arrow pointing down. The edge of the logo is missing some top color and is white which I beleive reads TRADE MARK and some other info I could not make out. This is possibly identification relating to the new prohibition laws.
This case includes a paper/cardboard separator to separate the 24 bottles. Not sure, but the separator was probably an insert for the 1935 bottles although it's possible an original separator from when the case was made).
CASE CONDITION: Very Good Condition especially for a wooden case that is over 90 years old. The text is clean and clearly legible as shown in the pics. The case wood is solid and sturdy with metal strapped corners. The 1935 Old Milwaukee bottles were used in this older case.
BOTTLES: Included with this find is 24 original Old Milwaukee Beer (Made by Schlitz) 12 oz. longneck bottles. The labels are Copyright dated 1934.
These bottle labels are dated 10-21-35 by the perforations on the bottle labels. These are possibly older labels, 1934, that are newly dated with perforations.
The labels for these bottles are in various conditions. Most of the labels had released from the bottles over the years and laying in the bottom of the case. These labels were painsakingly puzzled together and reattached to the bottles (aligning with partial logo's on the bottles) using acid free stick glue. A few of the bottles had retained a lot of the label and I have marked these.
None of the bottles have a complete neck label. One bottle has a chipped lip.
Before the bottle labels were reattached, the bottles were very carefully cleaned on the exterior. The interior of the bottles were carefully rinsed but not scrubbed clean due to the fragile labels on the outside.
* "On March 22, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt signed into law the Cullen–Harrison Act, legalizing beer with an alcohol content of 3.2% (by weight) and wine of a similarly low alcohol content. On December 5, ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment repealed the Eighteenth Amendment"
